What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is one method which you can use to upload your locally developed web site files to our Server. In order to use FTP you will need an FTP client. This is a program which uses FTP to upload your files to our Servers. Some common FTP programs are WS FTP, Terrapin and Cute FTP. We recommend Cute FTP for its ease of use. You can download Cute FTP from:
Using Cute FTP
When you first open Cute FTP you will see the 'FTP Site Manager'. If this does not show, then click the icon of an opening book on top left of the menu bar. You should see the following screen.
Next click 'Add site'. This allows you to set up an FTP account so you can upload your web site to our Server. You should see the following screen.
You need to fill in the following information.
  • Site Label: This is a label so you can identify the account within Cute FTP. This can be anything you like.
  • FTP host address: This is the IP address as supplied in the account setup details you received from us via e-mail. (eg.207.71.8.203)
  • Username: This is the ftp user name as supplied in the account setup details you received from us via e-mail.
  • Password: This is the ftp password as supplied in the account setup details you received from us via e-mail.
You may want to fill in details in the 'Initial Local Directory', or 'Initial Remote Directory' fields. These are not essential and should only be used if you are sure of the paths you are using. If you get these wrong, your FTP client could return errors. After you have completed these details, click 'OK'. You will then be taken back to the 'FTP Site Manager', where you will see the account you have just added. You should see the following screen with the 'Site Label' you added in the right hand side of the 'Site Manager Window'
Now you can select the account by clicking on it. After the account is selected, click the 'Connect' button, which will connect you to the FTP account. At this point you should find the files on your local machine (in the left hand pane), and the location you wish to upload them to (in the right hand pane). After you have located these, you can click and drag the files from the left hand pane (your local web site files), and drop them in the right hand pane (where the website files are stored on our Servers. If you have troubles connecting or holding a ftp connection with our server you should try the following -
  • Go to the 'FTP' pull down menu from the menu bar.
  • Go to 'Settings" then 'Options'.
  • Go to the 'Firewall' tab then de-select - 'PASV mode' as shown below, having this selected will not allow you through our Firewall. Also Select Enable Firewall Access -
  • Then Click 'OK' then try once again.
